Meet the guy who thinks outside the lunchbox. His name is Adrian Fiorino, and he's the web's craziest sandwich artist. We talked to Fiorino about his blog, what makes up the perfect sandwich, and his favorite places to feast on a sane lunch in Toronto. AndrewZimmern.com: What inspired the Insanewiches blog? Adrian Fiorino: The blog stems from my intense passion for food and humor. I wanted to create a place where other foodies could surf at lunch, laugh a bit and be inspired to create their own unique sandwiches.
AZ.com: What was the first insanewich? AF: The first insanewich was The Breakfast Club Sandwich, though not the first posted. AZ.com: Any crazy sandwiches you'd like to build (or see)?
AF: I'm planning on building some
Halloween-inspired insanewiches. Here are some names I'm thinking of: The
Scream Cheese Melt, The Hand Sandwich, The Pumpkin Cheeseburger. AZ.com: You accept insanewich submissions. What are your top five tips to building an off-beat sandwich?
AF: 1. Look
around you–that cell phone, toolbox, cordless mouse can all be a sandwich.
2. Combine unlikely ideas: The Swine 'N Cheese Sandwich. AZ.com: Five best places to grab lunch in your hometown, Toronto, Canada.
AF: The
Freshwood Grill, 197 Baldwin St., (best sweet potato fries), Queen Mother Cafe, 208 Queen St. W. (Ping Gai Chicken) AZ.com: Describe your perfect sandwich. AF: My perfect steak and cheese: New York strip cooked medium rare, sliced thin, with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese on toasted sour dough rye, slathered with chipotle mayo. AZ.com: What's in your fridge? AF: Lots of cold cuts and cheese to make insanewiches, leftover chicken, washed salad greens, carbonated water, free-run eggs, dozens of condiments and a six-pack of beer. Adrian Fiorino was born in a suburb of Toronto, Canada in 1975, the youngest of four sons to Joe and Lina Fiorino. Food and humor played a strong roll in Adrian's upbringing. His mother was a homemaker who cooked everything from scratch. His father was head chef at the legendary Old Firehall restaurant and comedy cabaret in Toronto. In the mid-80s, Adrian pitched in after his father opened an Italian bakery as a side venture. He became interested in Creative Writing during high school, when he also started to develop kitchen skills. In his early twenties, he and two of his brothers opened a street-side cafe in King City, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1999, earning a Bachelor's degree in English and Philosophy. Some of Adrian's hobbies include photography, fishing and writing for his blog. He is an avid baseball fan and a passionate home cook. Adrian currently resides in downtown Toronto's lakefront community. |
