Description

I recently went to Iceland and brought back some hakarl and challenged a friend who owns a Pan-Asian restaurant to make something with it and this is what she came up with.  It actually is quite good.  Hakarl is impossible to find Stateside (can't imagine why LOL), so you need to go to Iceland and get your own or bum some off a friend who's been to Iceland.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ahi tuna
  • 0.5 lb hakarl
  • 2 limes (juiced)
  • 2 red thai chilis
  • 2 scallions
  • 1 shallot
  • 1 T ginger root
  • 2 T low sodium soy sauce

Instructions

Cut ahi tuna and hakarl into bite size cubes.  Mince chilis, ginger, shallot and scallions.  Combine fish, chilis, ginger, shallot, scallions, lime juice, sesame oil and soy sauce in a glass or plastic container and toss to mix.  Cover and refrigerate at least one hour to marinate.  Serve cold.

Notes

The hakarl adds a pungent briny fish flavour to the dish, but thankfully the lime juice counteracts much of the hakarl's ammonia smell.
