Taxes and restaurants

Andrew or Molly,

Here is a question for you. How do you think the upcoming slew of taxes will affect the restaurant industry. What I am specifically referring to is how Illinois is passing increases in taxes on liquor, beer, soda pop and candy. Liquor will be a almost 100% increase to 8.50 a gallon of booze. beer and soda will be 33 percent increase and candy 20 percent.  Illinois will be the first but many other states have this is in the works at all.  Obviously, the restaurants will have to pass this cost on to the patrons. So a vodka tonic which is now almost 6 bucks may go up to 8 bucks. I think people will just stop ordering drinks at restaurants and this will cause a general slow down in the hospitality industry., What are you thoughts? Anyone else care to comment?

That is quite the bummer!

This is maybe the first reason in a long time that I have heard information that has not made me want to move to Chicago. I think I would probably A) Drink less booze/soda and more tap water (probably a great move for my figure) B) Stay home more and enjoy a frosty beer on my deck. I mean, really? $8 for a drink is just too rich for my blood. Maybe I'll have to start flirting with bartenders (and by "start" I obviously mean "continue.")
