Mofongo

A few days ago, I finally went to a local Mexican/Puerto Rican restaurant, Senor Big Ed's, to try some of the PR delicacies.  I like to watch the travel channel personalities such as Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern and they both mentioned on their shows to eat the PR dish, mofongo.  Mofongo is mashed green plantains stuffed with pork rinds in garlic and olive oil and topped with various meats.  Knowing how fond PR is of their "lechoneras", I chose as my selections mofongo topped with pork and pernil de cerdo,"roasted leg of pork", which came with spanish rice with pigeon peas and bits of pork and fried plantain.  Having had my first few bites of mofongo, I imagined that it would be sweeter than what I was tasting, since it was mashed plantains. For my taste, it was a little dry and lacking in flavor.  Could be the quality of it or perhaps it was a bad day at the restaurant. The pork topping it was exquisite, as was the roasted pork leg.  The spanish rice was very good and the fried plantains were as sweet as honey.  I can now say that I've tasted Puerto Rican food.  I hope to try their other dishes soon.  Cheers!

Mofongo

Maybe the restaurant forgot to season it with garlic and salt. If u travel to La Parguera in Lajas P.R. or Joyuda in Cabo Rojo P.R. u will found the best mofongos in the island
