Hot Dish

Bass-O-Matic
Remember Dan Aykroyd’s SNL infauxmercial for the Bass-O-Matic? The juice you drink at breakfast may be going the same route. Tropicana’s new Heart Healthy line of OJ includes nutritious Omega-3s from anchovies… without the fishy flavor. This is just another product on the market which is fortified with nutrients to appeal to a more health conscious consumer. Would you drink an orange-flavored fish cocktail?

Brown Bag Lunch

Packing lunch for the kiddies can be tough. You want them to eat healthy, nutritious food… but crafting something they’ll actually ingest at school is an art form. If it’s too healthy, they’ll try to trade with some kid who has a Little Debbie, if it’s too weird, they’ll be embarrassed to eat it in front of their classmates. I liked this article NPR.org did on packing the brown bag lunch. Good tips on how to make healthy, kid friendly food they’ll be psyched to eat.

Still More on Livin' La Vida Locavore
We hear it everywhere: Eat and buy local. And buying domestic just got easier: Starting Sept. 30, federal law mandates that big grocers label the country of origin for meats, produce and some nuts. That’s great, but what about the whole thing about how even the domestic food we eat is shipped, on average, from about 1,500 miles away? Turns out, that might not be the case. Slate.com takes a look into this so-called pilgrimage to your table.

I don't drink much OJ, but

I don't drink much OJ, but I probably would be one of those people who buys into the whole "Fortified with Omega-3s" thing. However, I will point out that I think the Diet Coke with Vitamins is taking this all a bit too far.

PS the Bassomatic is one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches.
